November 2014 at Beacon

Upcoming Community Events at Beacon:

Neighborhood Gratitudes & Caramel Apple Bar & Family Volunteer Night:

Wednesdays November 5th & 19th from 6:30-7:30pm

Neighborhood Gratitudes & Caramel Apple Bar: On November 5th from 6:30-7:30pm we’ll gather in the sanctuary to make our own caramel apples topped with all kinds of toppings: sprinkles, mini-marshmallows, and crushed pretzels, to name a few. While we create, we’ll be chatting about the things and people we’re grateful for in this neighborhood as a way of celebrating Thanksgiving a little early. All children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.

Family Volunteer Night: on November 19th from 6:30-7:30pm Join us for an evening of sprucing up Beacon’s building through a variety of tasks that all ages can participate in. We’ll also be hanging the advent banner that we made in October. See you there! All children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.

What Parents Need to Know:

**We recently realized that several September newsletters did not get mailed. For those of you who missed September, we apologize, and hope to see you at our programs soon!

Studio Schedule:

Mondays 4-6pm: Drop In Studio (youth ages 11+)

Tuesdays 4-6pm: Story Studio (children ages 5+)

Wednesdays 4-6pm: Art Studio (children ages 5+)

The Studio follows the Philadelphia Public School schedule. We will be closed on Monday 11/3, Tuesday 11/4, 11/11, and Wednesday 11/26. [On half-days, we are still open unless we tell you otherwise.]

Don’t forget: all our programs are free, open to all, include a healthy snack, and secular (non-religious).

Thank you for being our village!

As we move into cooler weather, our gratitude turns to all the generous gifts and volunteer hours that keep our building safe and warm. While it may not seem exciting, a warm place to be in the wintertime is not always a given. This fall we are grateful for all of you who have pitched in to help us on family volunteer nights and church cleanup days; all of you who invest in the basics, so that Beacon might be a place of warmth and welcome to all who gather here. We offer a special thanks to the Presbytery of Philadelphia who helped us with a new boiler last fall. Friends, the heat is on and we welcome all of you to join us in worship or the Studio as the weather gets cooler!

Stories from the Studio…

Last month we celebrated Halloween with a two-week project built from old milk jugs and some wild ideas from our artists! Our inspiration came from one of our many volunteer geniuses, veteran art teacher Donna Jones. We had a great time with our hands covered in glue and we are very proud of the results!
