{Evening Prayer on p.120 of Book of Common Worship Daily Prayer}

Gathering:

One: Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening

All: and the day is almost over. (Luke 24:29)

The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light.

The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness has not overcome it.

Those who dwell in the land of deep darkness,

On them has the light shined.

We have beheld Christ’s glory,

glory as of the only Son of the Father.

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given.

In him was life,

and the life was the light of all people. (Is. 9, John 1)

Hymn:

Create in Me a Clean Heart

Scripture: Luke 2:22-40 (Simeon & Anna)

Treasure these words and ponder them in your heart.

Thanks be to God. (Luke 2:19)

Discussion/Lectio

-The text says Simeon was ‘moved by the Spirit’ (v27). Have you ever felt moved by the Spirit? What does that look like for you?

-Jesus being presented in the temple mirrors the ritual of baptizing babies at a young age in worship. Share a meaningful baptism memory with the group, either from your faith experience or your family.

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

(Hear prayer requests and follow with “Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.”)

Loving God, we give you thanks for the good news of Jesus Christ for all;

the wonder and beauty of creation;

the love of family and friends;

opportunities for faithful service;

particular blessings of this day.

We lift up to you and ask for your care and healing for the Church universal;

peace and justice in the world;

those in whom we see Christ’s suffering;

those who offer Christ’s compassion;

particular concerns of this day.

Eternal God, in Jesus Christ your light shines in our darkness,

giving joy in sorrow and comfort in loneliness.

fill us with the mystery of your Word made flesh,

until our hearts overflow with praise and joy,

for he is the beginning and the end of all that exists,

living forevermore.

We pray this in the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray:

Our Father, who art in Heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the Kingdom,

and the power,

and the glory, forever,

Amen.

Hymn: Great is Thy Faithfulness

Dismissal:

The loving kindness of the Lord our God, The grace of Jesus Christ our Savior,

and the renewing power of the Holy Spirit

be with us all. Amen.

Bless the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.
